Wool processing has been a trade in Mosfellsbaer since 1896, previously with the company Álafoss of Iceland. In 1991, the company Ístex (Icelandic Textile Industry) was formed and took over the wool processing. Today, Istex is buying the wool directly from the farmers in Iceland and then process it to world famous yarns like Álafosslopi, Léttlopi and Plötulopi.
The Icelandic wool consists of two types of fiber – the wet-resistant outer coat with long, coarse fibres and the insulating layer beneath with soft, short fibres. Together, these two distinctive fibers creates a magical yarn that is light, water-repellent and breathable.
