A warm welcome on Lucia Day. Today we finally see more light in the form of Lucia and her bridesmaids and hear their pretty song! We at Järbo hope that this Knit-Along will be another point of light where we can meet – something we all need in these times.

Are you ready with your yarn and needles and something yummy for your Christmas treat? Let’s get started with the first part of Christmas mittens 2020 pattern.

In part 1, we will focus on the ribbed cuff which begins with a special type of ribbed cast-on for a very sweet and decorative design. After that, we’ll knit a Latvian braid for a pretty finishing touch to the cuff.

NOTE So your mittens will have the correct measurements as given in the sizing information, it is important that you check to make sure your gauge matches the given gauge before you begin knitting! Here’s all the information you need concerning materials, amounts, gauge, and sizing.

CUFF

With color 1 and dpn U. S. 4 / 3.5 mm, cast on 25 sts.

NOTE, the first two rows are worked back and forth.

Row 1: K1, *increase 1 st by inserting the right needle under the left needle and picking up the strand between two sts, k1* ; repeat  to * across. (see video below) = 49 sts.

Row 2: *K1, p1*; rep * to * until 1 st remains, end k1.

Now join to knit in the round. K2tog joining the last st of round with first st: Divide sts over 4 dpn. Move the last st to needle 1 and knit it together with the first st. P1 and then continue around in k1, p1 ribbing = 48 sts.

Continue in ribbing until cuff measures 2 in / 5 cm. Knit 1 rnd.

Latvian Braid

Rnd 1: *K1 with color 1, k1 with color 2*; repeat * to * around.

Rnd 2: Holding both yarns in front of work throughout, always bring new color under the previous one when changing colors. *P1 with color 1, p1 with color 2*; repeat * to * around.

Rnd 3: Holding both yarns in front of work throughout, always bring the new color over the previous one when changing colors. *P1 with color 1, p1 with color 2*; repeat * to * around.

Now rest your knitting while you enjoy a lovely Lucia day. Good luck with your knitting.
