Julvanten (Christmas Mittens) 2020 begins on Lucia Day (13 December). We will publish the first part of the pattern at 6 am so those of you who want to get up very early and knit until daylight on Lucia morning will have plenty of time to gather your materials and check out the pattern. We look forward to creating this special time with everyone who wants to share this cozy tradition with us!

Yarn and Colors

The Christmas mittens are knitted with our fine new Svensk Ull (Swedish Wool) yarn – which we are very proud of! It is a 3-ply wool yarn made with Swedish wools spun at Klippans Yllefabrik and available in 16 colors. You can read more about the yarn here and find out why we are so happy to be able to make the most of Swedish wool.

For the Christmas mittens, you’ll need two colors: one skein (100 g) of each color. Our color recommendations are below. Because the mittens are worked with two colors, it is important to choose two colors that contrast well with each other. If you choose any of our suggested color combinations, you can be assured that the colors will work well together. Do you want to choose your own colors? Just make sure the colors contrast well enough so the pattern will be distinct.

The Christmas mittens are sized for women, with the following measurements:

Width: 3¾ in / 9.5 cm

Total length: 9¾ in / 25 cm

Length, thumb: 2½ in / 6 cm

Length, thumb gussset: 2¾ in / 7 cm

Length of hand (from top of thumb gusset): 4¾ in / 12 cm

Length from top of cuff to top of mitten: 7¾ in / 19.5 cm

Gauge

25 sts x 24 rounds = 4 x 4 in / 10 x 10 cm in two-color stranded knitting on needles U. S. 4 / 3.5 mm
