Julvanten 2020 - Part 2

A very warm welcome back! Now it’s time for part 2 of our Christmas mittens KAL. We hope that you are enjoying the Christmas spirit and that knitting the cuff went well.

Part 2  is worked primarily in two-color stranded knitting. We’ll also increase for the thumb gusset and decrease to shape the top of the mitten. Stitches and Techniques below tells you how to increase and decrease in this pattern.

STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES

Increase (make) 1 st left = M1L: With left needle tip, pick up strand between two stitches from front to back and knit into back loop.  Watch this video to see how.

Increase (make) 1 right = M1R: With left needle tip, pick up strand between two stitches and knit into front loop.

Decrease one stitch – left leaning (sl 1, k1, psso): Slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over the knitted stitch.

Decrease one stitch – right leaning: Knit 2 together (k2tog).

Decrease 2 stitches: double decrease (sl 1, k2tog, psso): Slip 1 stitch, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over knitted stitch.

Slip marker (sl m): Move marker from left to right needle when you come to it.

RIGHT GLOVE

HAND

With color 2: Knit 1 round.

Work around in pattern following chart A, rows 1 and 2.

Thumb Gusset

Place a marker for the thumb gusset after the 12th stitch on needle 3.

Work around in pattern and increase for the thumb gussset after the marker, following chart  A, from chart rows 3-10. (NOTE! See Stitches and Techniques for how to increase.)

Continuation, hand:

Round 19: Work sts 1-24 following chart A, slip the next 12 sts to a holder (a smooth contrast color strand of yarn). Cast on 4 new sts ”behind” the thumb with color  2, color 1, color 2, and color 1, using the double loop cast-on, and then continue around following the chart.

Then place a marker after the 12th stitch on needle number 3.

Work pattern and increase for thumb wedge after marker, according to diagram A, rounds 3-18. 

Work in pattern following chart rows 20-35.

Top of mitten:

Decrease following chart A, rows 36-45. (NOTE! See Stitches and Techniques for how to decrease.)

Cut yarn and draw end through remaining sts. Weave in all ends neatly on WS.

LEFT-HAND MITTEN

Work following instructions for the right-hand mitten but use chart B instead of chart A and place the thumb gusset marker after the 9th st on needle 3. Increase for gusset with M1R before the marker, following chart B.
