A very warm welcome, on Santa Lucia Day!

Today, we will finally return to the light with Lucia and her handmaidens and listen to the lovely song! Those of us at Järbo hope that this Knit-along will be another point of light where we can meet – something we need so much in these times.

We hope you are ready with your yarn and needles and maybe a tasty Christmas treat because we are now about to begin with the first part of the Christmas mittens 2022!

In Part 1, we will focus on the classic ribbed cuff and a pattern-knitted thumb gusset.

NOTE In order for your mittens to have the same measurements as those given in the pattern’s size information, it is important that your gauge matches before you begin knitting! Here’s all the information you need about materials, gauge and sizing.

STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES

Invisible Increase in Stitch Below/Right-Lifted Increase (RLI): Insert right needle knitwise into stitch below first stitch on left needle. Lift loop onto left needle and knit into front loop. Now knit original first st.

RIGHT-HAND MITTEN

CUFF

With dpn and color 1, CO 48 sts. Divide sts over 4 dpn and join to knit in the round; pm for beginning of rnd.

Work around in k2, p2 ribbing for 2 in / 5 cm.

HAND

Knit 1 rnd.

Continue in stockinette (= knit all stitches in the round).

Work pattern following chart A1 (chart rows 1-4).

TWO-COLOR STRANDED KNITING

Thumb Gusset

Continue in pattern, increasing for thumb gusset as shown on chart A1 (chart rows 5-18). Increase with RLI (see Stitches and Techniques and video). Once you’ve worked chart row 18, the thumb gusset is finished.

INCREASE 1 RLI

LEFT-HAND MITTEN

Work as for right-hand mitten, but substitute chart A1 with B1 so mitten is reverse-image.
